jameson and writer's workshop...

Jameson has something at school called Writer's Workshop.  They get to write a story about whatever they'd like and draw a picture to go along.  He came home today with a bunch of them that are too cute to not share!  Keep in mind, he's in first grade and still has a lot to learn about spelling. ;)

1.  "I had a hard sleep last nit.  I triyd to sleep. My mom lad with me.  I fil asep and I wak up."
Translation:  I had a hard sleep last night.  I tried to sleep.  My mom laid with me.  I fell asleep and I woke up.

2.  "I got a now cot sam tim hid adr the bord."
Translation:  I got a new cat.  Some times he hides under the board."

3.  "My mom lax flowrs she lax orange flowrs she pex ven and she pas vem war wotr."
Translation:   My mom likes flowers.  She likes orange flowers.  She picks them and she puts them in warm (?) water.

4.  "I went to the playground for a menet".
Translation:  I went to the playground for a minute.

5.  "I am gowen to the dentest to doy.  Dad is gowen to pek me up.  I am go to the West Bend Dentest."
Translation:  I am going to the dentist today.  Dad is going to pick me up.  I am going to the West Bend Dentist.

6.  "tDa is fon Friday at school we hav a a extreses."
Translation:  Today is fun Friday at school.  We have an extra recess.

7.  "My mom ind me uphed lego uavrs you hd to beld a ricit you had to shyous a sord!"
Translation:  My mom ????? Lego Universe.  You had to build a rocket.  You had to use a sword!

8.  {my favorite} "Mom fot we hav a bo in or bmastmet bt we dot."
Translation:  Mom thought we have a BAH in our basement but we don't.  (Read very bottom of the screen for explanation of I'm gonna call the BAH! ;)

9.  {another favorite}  "We have a now belg.  It is next to the baen.  Var was a telhantr var."
Translation:  We have a new building.  It is next to the barn.  There was a telehandler there.

The picture that goes with this one is stellar.  Left side - the aforementioned telehandler.  The right side?!  Sawbucks with beer cans.  Busch Light blue ones.  Jameson's teacher sent me this email:  "I was dying laughing today.  We were doing writer's workshop.  Jameson was reading his piece to me.  He wrote about a new tractor type thing parked by the barn.  He had drawn a picnic table with blue glasses or cans on it. I said, "what's this?"  He looked at me all sheepishly and said, "They were drinking beer."  I almost lost it!!

Scent...

I was sitting with Jameson for a few minutes before starting the bedtime routine. He was holding my hand as we sat quietly on the couch next to each other. He put my hand to his mouth and kissed it sweetly...then left it there a moment while he breathed in slowly.

"Jameson, what are you doing?"

He smiled sweetly. "Smelling your hand. It smells like YOU."

here we go again...

school started for jameson on september 1st and for natalia on september 7th.  yesterday, september 18th, natalia woke with a fever (100 - 102 for those interested).  last week jameson had a few days of congestion and coughing.  argh.  that didn't take long. :(

we had such a terrible time with illnesses last school year that i'd hoped we'd have all built up strong immune systems this year.  grr.

two funnies from natalia...

1.  jim was asking her if she was excited for school.  her response?  "hardly." (used in the right context, obviously, but i think she must assume it means YES...because she LOVES school.)

2.  she was cutting out pictures from magazines to make a "project" for grandma and papa and found one she especially liked.  she said, "i'm totally cutting this out for papa.  TOTALLY.  i totally love this one.  TOTALLY..."  obviously, her new favorite word is ... totally...said with 14 year old 'tude. ;)

impact on the innocent...

i've allowed and even encouraged the kids to watch the programming about 9/11.  they are young, yes...and it's a hard concept to describe and for them to understand.  but, i see no point in hiding it from them or them from it.  plus, i see it as an excellent opportunity to teach them about tolerance..freedom...humanity...danger.

jameson asks a ton of questions.  tons.  he really wants to know all about it.

after watching some programs today, i found him quietly drawing at the easel...

can you see what's sticking out?...

and, the end result...

at this point, he thinks that because the "bad guys" died when the planes crashed that all is well with the world now.  i didn't have the heart to explain the entire situation to a 6 year old (or the where with all - i wasn't prepared for the direction his questioning went).  i'll have to think about how to do that delicately.

saw a great "quote" recently ... "it's not about where you were on 9/11, it's about WHO you were...and who you are NOW."
